What is Kinesiology Tape?
Kinesiology tape is the brightly colored, stretchy, therapeutic tape that first gained attention while being worn by gold medal athletes in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It is commonly used as an adjunct in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries as well as many orthopedic, neuromuscular and inflammatory conditions. Depending on the patient's condition or injury, kinesiology tape is utilized a variety of patterns and application techniques to provide stability to joints and muscles so that pain and inflammation are reduced, tired muscles are relaxed and consistently active muscles are supported. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows it to be worn without binding, constricting or restriction of movement.
What Makes Kinesiology Tape Different?
Traditional athletic tape is thick and non-elastic and is wrapped tightly around an injured area to provide rigid support and restrict movement. It must be removed immediately after activity to restore movement and circulation. Kinesiology tape, on the other hand, is thin and flexible to provide support while allowing a safe and functional range of motion. Rather than being wrapped completely around an injured area, kinesiology tape is applied directly over or around the periphery of the area of injury. Most applications can be worn for 3-5 days even during intense exercise, showering, bathing or swimming. The therapeutic benefits accumulate 24/7 while the tape is being worn.
